August 2019 General Meeting

Minutes PART Meeting August 20, 2019

Andy, KB1OIQ, opened the meeting with the usual round of introductions.

Announcements:
  1. Hugh, N1QGE, thanked everyone for their Food Pantry donations.  The Senior Center very much appreciates these.
  2. Alan, W1AHM, gave a Treasurer’s report – as of tonight there are 90 members.  Balance in the General Fund is $12,880 with $6,370 in the Repeater Fund.
  3. HamXposition, formerly known as ‘Boxboro’ will be held in Boxboro, MA, September 6-8, 2019 -  a full 2 ½ days of forums.
  4. Kit building event.  Allison, KB1GMX, is working on the instruction manual; Steve, W1KBE and Andy, KB1OIQ, have all of the parts.
  5. PART elections will be held at the September meeting.  Contact Al, K1ALL, to make a nomination.

The speaker for the evening was Bob Rose, KC1DSQ.
Bob spoke on the
design, analysis and construction of a new 80 meter Off-Center Fed Dipole that was used very successfully at the 2019 Field Day.
The design covered the even harmonics on the 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meter bands with a SWR of 3:1.

Bob spoke on the effects of moving the feed point; types of capacitors used; tuning; and radiation patterns.
His presentation will be available on the WB1GOF website.

Andy wrapped up the meeting with an occasion for some members to tell a short story:
  1. Bob, W1IS, on a wire antenna;
  2. Greg, N1DAM, on a hardware project for the Internet of Things;
  3. Andy on getting lost while hunting the fox on Westford Conservation Land.
